from Times of Brother Jonathan
"Gould
has done for Brother Jonathan what the late Bell Wiley did
for Johnny Reb and Billy
Yank: he has humanized him.
Times of Brother Jonathan
is an important
contribution to the usually
neglected human story behind the War of Independence.
Brother Jonathan, the GI
Joe of the American Revolution, finally receives his due
in this thoroughly researched,
well-written book."

The American Civil War Afloat
Times
of Brother Jonathan is not the story of what the GI Joe of the American
War of Independence
did to earn our freedom. That story has been told
many times. Rather, for the first time, this is
a book about what American freedom fighters ate,
drank, wore, believed in, and suffered
from medically. These are the factors that determined
how they fought and won.
The nickname Brother Jonathan was given to Yankee
soldiers by Lieutenant General George
Washington when asked what his source would be
for much needed war materiel. He replied,
"We must consult Brother Jonathan," meaning that
the enterprising governor of Connecticut,
Jonathan Trumbull, would somehow provide. Indeed,
Connecticut became the main supply source
for the Northern and Middle Departments, and the
sobriquet Brother Jonathan synonymous
with a Yankee soldier.
Times of Brother Jonathan is a compilation
of pertinent facts about conditions that contributed
to his fighting environment. Other books tell
of his battles and deprivations,
as at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, and during the
second winter at
Morristown, New Jersey.
But Times of Brother Jonathan is about
the soldier's daily life and the horrible sicknesses, more
dreaded than the British, that threatened him.
This is the necessary background material omitted
from other histories of the War of Independence,
now thoroughly researched for
and collected in this important volume.
