"Janey: A Little
Plane in a Big War is a splendid addition
to the collections
of scholars of WWII aviation…
and a reminder that
old-fashioned seat-of-the-pants flying was still relevant
amid the technological
advances of that conflict."
—Jon Guttman,
World War II Magazine

Janey
was Alfred W. Schultz's World War II artillery
spotter
plane, an L-4B Piper Cub.Both Janey and Schultz
participated
in the fighting from North Africa through
Sicily,
Italy, and southern France to Germany.
Janey
was the only L-4B Piper Cub to survive
the
entire European War intact. In August 1945,
Janey
was exhibited in Paris at the Eiffel Tower
along
with the bigger, fiercer, and sexier
World
War II fighters and bombers.
Janey
and Schultz were General Patton's limo and driver for a time, taking Patton
on
dangerous flights to observe ground fighting, to check out German glider
fields,
and
to meet wounded soldiers as they were being evacuated.
Flying
over an artillery range in Morocco, Janey was hit and almost brought
down
by
a shepherd's staff. In Italy, Janey and Schultz lured a wily Messerschmitt
109
into
a mountain and received credit for the kill.

"...filled with interesting
endeavors (about artillery spotting)
that are not widely known.
If you are a George Patton fan,
this publication has
accounts that you shouldn't miss."
--AMERICAN AVIATION HISTORICAL
SOCIETY Newsletter
"Little (about observation
pilots) has received much attention in World War II
literature, so Schultz
and Neff's effort deserves a big catch-up readership."
--AMERICAN LIBRARY
ASSOCIATION'S BOOKLIST Magazine
"Flying in his Piper
Cub, Janey, Schultz saw more of World War II than anybody in the
3rd Infantry Division.
He enjoyed badgering the Germans and Janey became a legend."
--GENERAL WALTER T. KERWIN,
JR. (Retired)
"I HEARD THIS MESSERSCHMITT
109 COMING OUT OF THE SUN.
THE WAY THE 109S SCREAMED
WAS LIKE A SIREN.
YOU COULD HEAR 'EM BEFORE
YOU SAW 'EM."
