The Vietnam War saw the use of aircraft on an unprecedented scale. The helicopter, particularly,
came into its own in a variety of roles. American airmen fought bravely, often at the cost of their lives,
whether bombing the North or South, directing artillery fire, flying fighter cover or bombers,
rescuing downed air crew or ground troops, airlifting men and cargo in dangerous areas,
or quietly resisting as prisoners of war.
Using official unclassified U.S. government sources, Erhard Konerding, documents librarian
at Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut, researched, edited and included in the book over
25 rarely told stories involving aircraft and crews.
Some of these stories were written during the Vietnam War. Others appeared in official histories
and studies written for the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps.
Konerding does not attempt to include stories about every type of aircraft that participated
in the hostilities in Vietnam. He selected representative types of aircraft and includes a true story for each.
Historians, veterans, aircraft buffs and model builders will find the stories, photographs
and aircraft specifications of interest. Since aircraft weights, speeds and armament vary
with subtypes and missions, the technical specifications included usually represent
the specific aircraft model described.
