The front cover illustrations on this book illustrate Molly Pitcher fighting for American freedom at
the Battle of Monmouth and Cornplanter, also known as Garganwahgah or John O'Bail. Cornplanter
was an Iroquois leader, chief of the Senecas, and he supported the other side, the British,
during the American Revolution.
Blacks, Indians and women were very much involved in our war for independence on both sides.
The purpose of this book is to highlight their contributions. As Dudley C Gould says in his
introduction, "...one is left with the impression that there were no Black warriors, Indians, or
noteworthy women on the combat scene."
Eighteenth-century historians did not report on their involvement because they considered them
to be unimportant subjects. Gould's pages tell a different story.
But why is it important to bring Blacks, Indians and women's contributions to our attention?
Edward Everett (1794-1865), US Senator and Millard Fillmore's Secretary of State, said:
"And how is the spirit of a free people to be formed and animated and cheered,
but out of the storehouse of its historic recollections?"
Those records in the storehouse must be complete.
These quotes by men on both sides of the American Revolutionary War say it all:
"I admire the American troops tremendously! It is incredible that soldiers composed even of
children of 15, of whites and blacks, almost naked, unpaid and rather poorly fed, can march so well
and withstand fire so steadfastly."
"I cannot insist too strongly how I was surprised by the American Army. It is truly incredible
that troops almost naked, poorly paid and composed of old men and children and Negroes should
behave so well on the march under fire."
